Kosi Tappu Wildlife Reserve Tour
The Koshi Tappu (176 sq. km) was established in 1976 to protect the rare wild water buffaloes, Arna (Bubalus arnee). It is a protected area in the Terai (low land) of eastern Nepal. In 1987, the Koshi Tappu was declared a Ramsar site, a wetland of international importance.
Koshi Tappu is only the home of Arnas in Nepal. That's why, for visitors interested in seeing Arna in Nepal, Koshi Tappu is only the option. There are 327 Arnas as of last of 2014 in Koshi Tappu Reserve.
A wide range of faunal species inhabit in the reserve which has important habitat for a variety of wildlife. Animal species, including Hog dear, Wild boar, spotted deer, Blue bull and Rock python reside in this reserve. The Koshi River is a home of 80 species of fish, including the endangered Gharial crocodile and Gangetic dolphins.
The very famous bird watching reserve is the smallest wildlife reserve in Nepal. Around 441 species of birds, most of them domestic, have been recorded in this reserve. Other birds found in here includes 20 duck species, 2 ibis species, white tailed stonechat, striated marsh warbler, shore birds, water birds, and the endangered swamp partridge and Bengal florican. The best time to see and enjoy the migratory and local birds is dusk and dawn in October to March when the visitors can view also the beautiful mountains.
