Gear List

Gear List for Motorbike Tour in Nepal

A motorbike tour in Nepal can take you through busy cities, winding mountain roads, dusty off-road trails, high-altitude areas, and places where weather can change quickly. We recommend bringing practical riding gear and personal equipment to stay safe and comfortable throughout the journey.

  1. Motorcycle Riding & Safety Gear

DOT/ECE-approved motorcycle helmet – A full-face helmet is strongly recommended for better protection from dust, wind, rain, and cold.

Motorcycle riding jacket – Preferably waterproof or water-resistant, with built-in protection for the shoulders, elbows, and back.

Motorcycle riding pants – Protective riding trousers are recommended, especially for off-road routes.

Motorcycle gloves – Bring waterproof or insulated gloves for cold and rainy conditions.

Motorcycle riding boots – Strong, ankle-supporting, waterproof riding boots are recommended.

Knee and elbow protection – Useful for riders using lighter riding gear or for challenging off-road sections.

Reflective vest or high-visibility clothing – Helpful when riding in low-light conditions or on busy roads.

Rain cover or waterproof riding suit – Particularly important during Nepal’s changing weather and monsoon conditions.

  1. Clothing

Lightweight T-shirts and shirts

Comfortable riding trousers and casual trousers

Warm fleece or woolen sweater

Down jacket or warm insulated jacket for high-altitude areas

Thermal innerwear for cold regions

Waterproof and windproof outer layer

Several pairs of socks

Warm woolen socks for colder areas

Comfortable casual shoes or sandals

Hat, cap, or warm beanie depending on the season

Underwear and other personal clothing

Tip: Pack clothing in layers because temperatures can change considerably between Kathmandu, the lowlands, and the Himalayan areas.

  1. Personal Protection from Sun & Weather

Sunglasses with UV protection

Sunscreen with a high SPF

Lip balm with sun protection

Buff, neck warmer, or scarf

Lightweight rain jacket or waterproof shell

Small personal umbrella where appropriate

  1. Travel & Personal Equipment

Small daypack or backpack

Waterproof bags or dry bags for important belongings

Reusable water bottle

Mobile phone

Phone charger and charging cable

Power bank

Universal travel adapter

Camera and spare batteries, if required

Small flashlight or headlamp

  1. Useful Items for Long and Off-Road Tours

For tours to areas such as Muktinath, Mustang, Manang, or other remote mountain roads, the following items can be particularly useful:

Waterproof dry bags

Small luggage straps or bungee cords

Dust mask or buff

Extra gloves

Spare socks

Basic personal repair items

Small multi-tool

Zip-lock bags for protecting electronics

Earplugs

Extra power bank or batteries

The motorcycle will be checked and prepared by our team before departure. Riders should nevertheless inform the guide immediately if they notice any mechanical problem, unusual noise, tyre problem, brake issue, or other safety concern during the journey.

What Not to Overpack

You do not need to bring large quantities of clothing or unnecessary equipment. A compact and practical luggage setup makes motorcycle riding much easier, particularly on winding mountain roads and off-road sections.

Recommended luggage: Keep your main luggage compact and secure, and carry frequently needed items in a small daypack or easily accessible riding bag.

Important Safety Note

Motorbike tours in Nepal involve different road conditions, including paved highways, winding mountain roads, gravel roads, dust, mud, steep sections, and occasional rough off-road tracks. Riders should have suitable riding experience and must follow the instructions of the tour leader or guide.

Safety comes first. Always wear a helmet and appropriate protective riding gear while riding.

SUPPORT

Important Information Before Your Motorbike Tour in Nepal

A motorbike tour in Nepal can take you through cities, highways, winding mountain roads, rural villages, gravel tracks, and high-altitude areas. Road and weather conditions can change quickly, especially on mountain and off-road routes. Please read the following information before booking your motorbike adventure.

Payment

A 15% down payment of the total tour cost is required to confirm your reservation.

Payment of the Balance

The remaining balance can normally be paid at our office after your arrival in Nepal and before starting the motorbike tour, unless otherwise agreed in advance.

Airport Arrival and Pickup

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, our representative will meet you outside the arrival area holding a Nepal Mountain Lovers Treks and Expedition signboard with your name or our company name.

If your flight schedule changes or is delayed, please inform us as soon as possible so that we can arrange your airport pickup accordingly.

International Air Tickets

International airfare is normally not included in the motorbike tour price. If you do not have a regular travel agent, we recommend comparing fares through reputable online flight-booking services or your preferred airline.

Motorcycle and Riding Experience

The motorcycle provided will depend on the route, road conditions, distance, and tour package. Some routes are suitable for standard road motorcycles, while remote mountain and off-road routes may require a more suitable adventure or off-road motorcycle.

Riders should have sufficient experience and confidence to handle motorcycles on winding roads, steep sections, gravel, mud, uneven surfaces, and changing road conditions where applicable.

Driving Licence

You must carry a valid motorcycle driving licence that permits you to ride the motorcycle used during the tour. An International Driving Permit (IDP) may also be required depending on your nationality and applicable regulations.

Please carry your original driving licence and passport during the tour.

Motorcycle Safety

A helmet must be worn whenever you are riding a motorcycle. We strongly recommend using appropriate protective riding equipment, including:

Motorcycle riding jacket with protective padding

Riding gloves

Protective riding trousers

Ankle-supporting riding boots

Eye protection or sunglasses

Waterproof riding gear for rainy conditions

Safety is our priority, and riders must follow the instructions of the tour leader or guide.

Motorcycle Inspection

Before starting the tour, the motorcycle will be checked to ensure that it is suitable for the planned journey. If you notice any mechanical problem, tyre problem, brake problem, unusual sound, or other safety issue during the tour, inform the guide immediately.

Road Conditions

Road conditions in Nepal vary considerably. Depending on the selected itinerary, you may ride on:

Paved highways

Winding mountain roads

Gravel roads

Rural roads

Dusty and muddy tracks

Rough off-road sections

Narrow mountain roads

Travel times shown in the itinerary are approximate because road, traffic, weather, construction, and local conditions can affect the journey.

Weather and Riding Conditions

Nepal has significant variations in climate and altitude. You may experience warm conditions in the lowlands and cold conditions in the mountains during the same trip.

Rain, fog, snow, landslides, road construction, and poor visibility can occasionally affect motorcycle travel. The itinerary may be adjusted when necessary for safety.

Accommodation

Accommodation depends on the selected motorbike tour and route.

In Kathmandu and other major tourist areas, we normally use comfortable tourist-standard hotels. In remote areas, accommodation may be in simple local hotels, lodges, or guesthouses because facilities are limited.

A twin-sharing room is normally provided. A single room can be arranged at an additional cost when available.

Meals

Meals included in your tour depend on the selected package and itinerary. Where meals are included, they may consist of breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

In cities and major tourist areas, a wider range of food is available. In remote mountain areas, food choices may be more limited.

Drinking Water

Bottled, filtered, or boiled drinking water is available in many places. During longer or remote rides, we recommend carrying a reusable water bottle and maintaining adequate hydration.

Luggage

Please keep your luggage compact because excessive luggage can make motorcycle riding difficult and affect riding comfort and safety.

We recommend using a small waterproof bag, soft luggage, or motorcycle-compatible luggage rather than a large hard suitcase, particularly for off-road and mountain tours.

The luggage allowance and luggage-support arrangements may vary according to the selected motorbike tour.

Laundry

Laundry services are available in Kathmandu and many major tourist areas. They may not be available every day during tours through remote areas.

Visa

Most international visitors can obtain a Nepal tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, subject to the applicable Nepal immigration requirements and visa rules.

Visa fees and permitted stay periods can change, so please check the latest requirements before travelling.

Currency and Payment

Nepalese Rupees (NPR) are the local currency. Major foreign currencies such as USD, EUR, GBP, AUD and CAD can generally be exchanged in Kathmandu and other major tourist areas.

Credit and debit cards are accepted at many hotels, restaurants and businesses in cities, while cash is more useful in rural and remote areas. ATMs are widely available in cities but may be limited or unavailable in remote destinations.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is compulsory.

Your insurance should provide suitable coverage for motorcycle travel and should cover medical treatment, accidents, emergency evacuation, and other risks associated with your planned trip.

If your itinerary reaches high-altitude or remote areas, make sure your insurance policy covers those activities and locations.

Emergency and Medical Services

Medical facilities are more readily available in Kathmandu and major towns but can be limited in remote mountain areas.

In case of a serious emergency, evacuation by road, helicopter, or other available transportation may be required. Any emergency evacuation and medical expenses are normally the responsibility of the traveler unless specifically covered by your insurance or tour package.

Altitude

Some motorbike tours travel to high-altitude destinations such as Muktinath, Mustang, Manang, or other Himalayan areas.

Altitude sickness can occur when travelling to higher elevations. Riders should inform the guide immediately if they experience symptoms such as headache, dizziness, unusual tiredness, nausea, difficulty breathing, or other unusual discomfort.

The tour leader may recommend rest, descending to a lower altitude, or changing the itinerary when necessary for safety.

Fuel Availability

Fuel stations are readily available in cities and along major highways but can be limited in remote mountain areas.

For longer or remote motorcycle journeys, the guide will plan fuel stops according to the route and motorcycle requirements. Riders should follow the guide’s advice regarding fuel availability.

Group Size

The normal maximum group size is 12 people, although the actual group size depends on the selected itinerary and motorcycle availability.

Private and customized motorbike tours can also be arranged for individuals, couples, families, and small groups.

Tour Customization

Our motorbike tours can be customized according to your:

Number of riding days

Preferred route

Road and off-road requirements

Motorcycle type

Accommodation standard

Sightseeing interests

Adventure activities

Group size

Budget

Therefore, the tour price and included services vary from one itinerary to another. We will provide a clear quotation based on your selected route and requirements before you confirm your booking.

Personal Expenses

Personal expenses are not normally included in the tour price. These may include personal shopping, additional drinks, snacks, laundry, telephone calls, souvenirs, and other services not specified in your itinerary.

Tips

Tipping is not compulsory, but it is appreciated when you are satisfied with the service provided by your guide, driver, support staff, hotel staff, or other service providers.

Travel Documents: You are responsible for carrying your passport, visa, motorcycle driving licence, International Driving Permit where applicable, insurance documents, and other required travel documents throughout the tour.

Emergency Situations: In the event of a serious emergency, natural disaster, road closure, political disturbance, or other situation beyond our control, we will make every reasonable effort to assist you and arrange an alternative plan. Additional costs arising from emergency transportation, accommodation, evacuation, or itinerary changes may be payable by the traveler unless covered by the tour package or insurance.

Complaints and Feedback: If you have any concern about the service during your motorbike tour, please inform your guide or our office as soon as possible. We welcome genuine complaints and will make reasonable efforts to resolve problems during the trip.

Responsibility of the Rider: Every rider is responsible for riding within their own ability, wearing appropriate safety equipment, following traffic regulations, and informing the guide about any health, safety, or motorcycle-related problem during the tour.

Important

Every motorbike tour is different. Please check the individual itinerary and quotation carefully to see exactly what is included and excluded from your selected package. If you require a particular motorcycle, accommodation standard, support vehicle, activity, or additional service, please inform us before booking so that we can include it in your customized quotation.

Climbing Mera Peak: An Unforgettable Adventure with Nepal Mountain Lovers I climbed Mera Peak with Nepal Mountain Lovers in April 2024, and it was one of the best trips of my life. Nepal is a land of magic, and the Nepalese people are kind, supportive, and welcoming. Tara, the organizer, has all these qualities and more. My sherpas, Wanglee and Gyalje, were incredible. Wanglee and I had so much fun on the way up to Khare and all the way back to Kathmandu. The accommodation, food, weather, and scenery were all fantastic. I'm already looking forward to another adventure with them in the future. I have full confidence in Tara and his organization, and I highly recommend them to everyone. Thanks a lot, my friend, and see you again soon!

Exceptional, Awesome and Amazing We are thrilled to share our extremely positive feedback about Nepal Mountain Lovers company, particularly regarding our experience with Tara and his team. Our group, consisting of 10 individuals from South India (some of us came from Melbourne, Australia (South India Origin)), embarked on a pilgrimage trip. Given our specific requirements for flights, accommodation, and food, Tara not only ensured that we had a memorable journey but also became a true friend to us. He effortlessly made us feel as though we were being guided by a trusted friend or family member. Tara took the time to understand our food preferences and always made arrangements to meet our needs, even when we made last-minute requests like wanting to do a motorbike ride on the hills. Thanks to his extensive knowledge of Nepal, our trip was made easy and stress-free.Recognising that many of our parents were elderly, Tara went above and beyond to organise the necessary facilities to accommodate their needs. Every aspect of our trip, from coordination to planning, was meticulously arranged. Throughout the 9-day trip, each day proved to be exceptional.Towards the end of our journey, we encountered unexpected challenges due to forest fires, resulting in the cancellation of flights from Jomsom and Pokhara. However, Tara swiftly arranged alternative transportation, ensuring our safety and ensuring that none of our planned activities were missed. It was disheartening to witness other travelers from other agencies stranded at the airport, while we were well taken care of by Tara and his team.We were delighted with the exceptional service provided by Tara and his team at Nepal Mountain Lovers. Should we have the opportunity to visit Nepal again, we would not hesitate to seek their services. In fact, my friends and I are already considering another adventure with Tara, particularly to the base camp.We wholeheartedly recommend Tara and Nepal Mountain Lovers to anyone seeking adventure, a pilgrimage, or simply a chance to admire the stunning mountains of Nepal. Their professionalism, expertise, and dedication are truly commendable.

The beauty of the Himalayas in the best of hands! We learned so much sightseeing even if we only had 2 days to visit Kathmandu, Tara, our city guide, was the best and knew exactly what to focus our attention on. We even had the privilege to participate in a cultural evening with Nepalese foods and traditional dance from various ethnic groups like the Sherpa and the Tamang. Wow! Hindouisme and Buddhism come together peacefully and colorfully in the capital city of Nepal! So many temples, stupas, monuments to honor Hindu gods or Buddha. A rich history to say the least that was very well presented to us!Tara also organized our 13 day trek to and from Everest base camp. He found us the best guide, Bishal, and local porters for our adventure. We are a Canadian family and we were with our 3 children, our youngest is 9 and we also have a 12 and 14 year old. We felt very safe and well advised all along the way. We discovered much about the food, the culture, the Buddhist monuments and the mountains thanks to our guide. When we were on our way back from EBC (yes we made it!) and needed some changes made regarding our flight back for example the communication was clear and efficient with both our trek guide and Tara.I highly recommend Nepal Mountain Lovers Treks and Expedition. The logistics of travel for our trekking expedition and the human connection with our guides were all in place to facilitate this unique experience. We have been blessed to have been able to witness the power and beauty of the Himalayas while in the best of hands!

Very Tara was accommodating, from the intial emails and calls until we arrived there. He was flexible as I changed my mind several times during the planning process. He personally accompanied us during the tour and it shows he is a very experienced guide/ owner. He has done a lot of the treks himself so you feel secured with him. Overall what a positive experience booking with this company!

I will come back! I was a solo traveller in a fabulous trekking organized by Mr. Tara in the first week of December, great period to go to the Everest region if you want to stay clear off tourist crowds. Everything was perfectly organized, was handled with professionalism, overall, my trekking experience was beyond my expectations. The package included airport pickup and drop-off 2 days in a very good 3 star hotel in Kathmandu, a round trip ticket Kathmandu-Lukla-Kathmandu, a cultural program, a price, and many other facilities usually given to large groups. My trekking started as for any tourists, from Lukla airport with Mr. Dipak, a very professional and experienced guide and also a great travel mate, open to any kinds of conversation all along the trek that lasted around 12 days. I added 2 extra days to visit Kathmandu guided by Mr. Tara who also helped me to get a special price for my extra days’ accommodation. I am a very happy and super satisfied trekker who keeps on recommending Mr. Tara’s agency, to friends and acquaintances. What I found really amazing, is I felt like travelling together with my best friends. I am going to repeat it adding Imja Tse peak.

Trek to Everest Base Camp and Visit of Kathmandu My son and I have had a wonderful trek to Everest Base Camp superbly organized by Tara. The guide and porter he selected were professional and took good care of us throughout the 12 days trek. Tara was our guide in Kathmandu and the area. All the site he selected were interesting to visit and see. All the recommendations he made either met or exceeded our expectations including the small hotel in the middle of the city and close to everything. Tara was also extremely flexible to adjust his plans and schedule to our last minute request. My son and I plan to go back to Nepal for another father and son trip and we will use no one else but Tara and the Nepal Mountain Lovers agency.

Well organized, flexible and delightful We contacted Tara over 2 years ago for the Everest Base Camp Trek, but the earthquake made it impossible. We had already given him the deposit for the trip. No problem, 2 years later, we were finally able to meet and do the trek! When we got sick going up, he added a day for use no problem. The guide he chose was reliable, flexible, fun and he knew his business. Tara called us on the mountain to make sure everything was okay. His advice made it possible for us to get to the base camp and to summit Kala Patthar. When we got back, we booked a small cultural tour of Kathmandu. Tara was our guide. Always smiling and laughing. He made this trip a delight. Very happy to have met this man. 10/10 would recommend and use again!

A Short But Memorable Trek In Nepal My friend and I had only a few days spare to visit Nepal, but as soon as I contacted Tara at Nepal Mountain Lovers I knew we would be able to arrange a trip that was full and worthwhile. Tara replied very promptly to my initial message and had designed an itinerary that suited our time frame very well. He was there to greet us at the airport and drive us straight to the International Guest House in Thamel district (we'd requested a budget trip and were pleasantly surprised with how nice the place was). Once we were settled in the hotel, Tara sat us down with the map and asked if we would like to do a trek that was a little more challenging than our initial itinerary - which we were more than happy to do. The trek itself was fantastic. The uphills did leave us a little breathless but were well worth it as we were rewarded with stunning views of the Kathmandu valley and the surrounding mountains. Along the way, Tara was full if interesting facts about Nepal - it's religion, politics and anything else we asked about. The pace of the trek was good, with plenty of breaks and stops to take pictures - at no point did we feel rushed. We also had no problem finding hotels to stay in along the way. Upon returning to Kathmandu, Tara took us on a walk through Bhaktapur, an ancient town full of fascinating architecture and historical curiosities. Our final evening was spent at a traditional Nepalese dinner, with dancers and musicians to entertain the guests, showcasing the best of Nepalese culture. Overall we were extremely pleased with the service provided. The cost was very reasonable and it left us free to enjoy Nepal's beautiful landscapes without having to worry about anything! Tara was an excellent guide, a friendly man who was very accommodating to our needs. We're already talking about returning to Nepal to do the Everest base camp trek. If you're planning a trip we would highly recommend getting in touch with Nepal Mountain Lovers.
