Damodar Kunda Tour – 6 Days by Private Jeep

Sacred Himalayan Pilgrimage to Damodar Kunda, Upper Mustang

Duration: 6 Days

Transportation: Private Jeep

Starting Point: Kathmandu

Destination: Damodar Kunda, Upper Mustang

Maximum Altitude: Around 4,890 m / 16,043 ft

Trip Type: Private pilgrimage and Himalayan adventure

Accommodation: Tourist hotels/lodges and simple local accommodation

Best Season: April–September, with the full moon period in July/August being particularly important for pilgrims.

Overview

The Damodar Kunda Tour by Private Jeep is a special pilgrimage journey into the remote Himalayan landscape of Upper Mustang. Damodar Kunda is a sacred group of high-altitude lakes associated with Hindu and Buddhist religious traditions and lies in one of the most isolated areas of northern Mustang.

The journey combines long mountain drives, sacred sites, dramatic Himalayan scenery and a high-altitude pilgrimage. The route takes you through Pokhara, Jomsom, Kagbeni and the remote Mustang landscape before reaching the Damodar Kunda area as far as road and local conditions permit.

Damodar Kunda is traditionally associated with Lord Vishnu, and the Kali Gandaki River has its source in this region. The area is also famous for Shaligram fossils, which are regarded by Hindus as sacred manifestations associated with Lord Vishnu. Nepal Tourism Board notes that pilgrims traditionally travel toward Damodar Kunda around the full moon of Shravan, generally falling in July or August.

Because the destination is at very high altitude, this is not an ordinary sightseeing tour. The final section may require walking, depending on the condition of the road, weather, local access restrictions and where the private Jeep can safely reach.

Upper Mustang is a restricted area, so the necessary permits must be arranged before entering the permitted route.

6-Day Damodar Kunda Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Kathmandu – Pokhara

Driving time: Approximately 6–7 hours

Distance: Approximately 200 km

Your private Jeep will pick you up from your hotel in Kathmandu in the morning and drive toward Pokhara.

The journey follows the Prithvi Highway through beautiful countryside, rivers, hills and traditional villages. You can stop for lunch and short breaks along the way.

After arriving in Pokhara, check in to your hotel and relax.

Overnight: Pokhara

Meals: Breakfast

Day 2: Pokhara – Jomsom – Kagbeni – Mustang

Driving: Approximately 7–9 hours depending on road conditions

After an early breakfast, begin the spectacular mountain drive from Pokhara toward Mustang.

The route passes through Beni, Tatopani, Ghasa, Marpha and Jomsom before continuing toward Kagbeni.

Jomsom is the administrative center of Mustang and an important gateway to the Mustang region. From Jomsom, the landscape changes dramatically as you enter the dry Himalayan rain-shadow region.

Continue toward Kagbeni, an ancient settlement at about 2,800 m. Kagbeni is an important religious location and also serves as a gateway toward Upper Mustang.

Depending on the road and permit arrangements, continue toward the overnight destination in the Mustang region.

Overnight: Kagbeni/nearby Mustang settlement

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: Drive toward Damodar Kunda Area

Private Jeep + high-altitude pilgrimage

After breakfast, continue your journey toward the remote Damodar Kunda region.

The landscape becomes increasingly barren and spectacular, with red cliffs, rocky mountains, high passes and the characteristic Tibetan-style landscape of Upper Mustang.

The road conditions in this remote region can be rough, and travel time depends heavily on weather and local road conditions.

Your experienced driver and guide will take the Jeep as far as the current road conditions and authorized access permit. From the final suitable road point, you may need to continue on foot toward the sacred lake area.

This is the most physically demanding part of the journey because of the altitude. Damodar Kunda is around 4,890 m / 16,043 ft according to Nepal Tourism Board’s tourism publication.

Spend time at the sacred lake, perform your pilgrimage and enjoy the extraordinary Himalayan surroundings.

Overnight: Local accommodation/camp depending on accessMeals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Important: The exact Jeep-access point and walking distance should be confirmed before departure because road conditions and local access can change.

Day 4: Damodar Kunda – Mustang

After your morning prayers and pilgrimage at Damodar Kunda, begin the return journey.

Walk back to the point where your Jeep is waiting and continue by private Jeep toward the lower Mustang region.

The return drive provides another opportunity to experience the unusual landscapes of Upper Mustang, including barren valleys, rocky cliffs, mountain passes and traditional settlements.

Depending on the final access point and road conditions, the overnight location may be Kagbeni, Jomsom or another suitable Mustang settlement.

Overnight: Mustang/Jomsom area

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5: Mustang – Muktinath – Pokhara

After breakfast, begin the drive toward Muktinath, one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in the Mustang region.

Muktinath is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists and lies at approximately 3,749 m.

Visit Muktinath Temple and the surrounding religious sites before continuing by private Jeep through Jomsom, Marpha and the Kali Gandaki valley toward Pokhara.

Arrive in Pokhara in the evening and check into your hotel.

Overnight: Pokhara

Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Day 6: Pokhara – Kathmandu

Driving time: Approximately 6–7 hours

After breakfast, drive by private Jeep from Pokhara back to Kathmandu.

The journey follows the scenic highway through the hills and river valleys of central Nepal.

Upon arrival in Kathmandu, your 6-day Damodar Kunda Private Jeep Tour ends.

If you have an international flight later in the day, we can arrange airport transfer according to your flight schedule.

Why Travel by Private Jeep?

A private Jeep makes the journey considerably more flexible than joining a fixed group.

You can stop for photographs, religious visits and meals according to your schedule. It is also particularly useful in Mustang because road conditions can change and some sections are rough and remote.

The Nepal Tourism Board confirms that road access has made Jeep/vehicle travel possible in the Mustang area, while Damodar Kunda itself remains a difficult high-altitude destination traditionally reached on foot.

Best Time for Damodar Kunda Tour

Damodar Kunda is located in a high and remote Himalayan environment.

April–June: Generally suitable for high-altitude travel, subject to local conditions.

July–August: Particularly important for pilgrimage. Many Hindu pilgrims traditionally travel to Damodar Kunda around the full moon of Shravan.

September: Good period for clear Himalayan scenery, subject to road and weather conditions.

Winter: Not recommended for this short Jeep pilgrimage because of extreme cold, possible snowfall and difficult high-altitude conditions.

Upper Mustang lies in the Himalayan rain shadow and can be visited during the monsoon period, but the Damodar Kunda access road is much more remote and should be assessed separately before departure.

Accommodation

Accommodation during the tour will depend on the actual route and road access.

Tourist-standard hotel in Kathmandu if required

Hotel in Pokhara

Lodge/guesthouse in Mustang

Simple local accommodation or camping near the remote Damodar Kunda approach, depending on current access

Twin-sharing rooms normally provided

Single room available at an additional cost

Because Damodar Kunda is extremely remote, luxury accommodation should not be expected in the high-altitude section.

Meals

During the journey, we provide:

Breakfast

Lunch

Dinner

Food will generally include Nepali, Tibetan and simple continental-style meals depending on the location.

At remote high-altitude locations, food choices are limited.

Damodar Kunda Tour Permits

Upper Mustang is a restricted area, and a special trekking permit is required for the applicable restricted-area routes. The Nepal Tourism Board states that the permit must be obtained from the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu and that travelers must remain within the authorized route.

Our team will arrange the required permits and coordinate the necessary local logistics before the journey.

Permit requirements and applicable fees should be confirmed at the time of booking, as government regulations and fees can change.

Altitude and Safety

The most important consideration on this journey is altitude.

Damodar Kunda is around 4,890 m, considerably higher than the normal Mustang road journey.

Visitors should:

Walk slowly at high altitude

Drink sufficient water

Avoid alcohol at high altitude

Inform the guide immediately if they feel unwell

Follow the guide’s instructions

Carry warm clothing

Allow flexibility for weather and road conditions

If severe altitude symptoms occur, the itinerary may need to be changed for safety.

Travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended.

Road Conditions

Mustang roads are mountainous and can be rough, particularly on remote sections. Driving time given in the itinerary is approximate.

Damodar Kunda Access

Nepal Tourism Board describes Damodar Kunda as an extremely difficult high-altitude destination traditionally reached by a multi-day trek from Kagbeni.
