Festivals of Lomanthang

Lomanthang stands as one of Nepal’s most remote yet culturally rich destinations, accessible by road. Regular bus and jeep services operate from Pokhara and Jomsom, with the journey from Pokhara taking approximately 10 hours and from Jomsom about 4 hours. Nowadays, travelers can reach Lomanthang from Jomsom in a single day, allowing for sightseeing at all significant locations without the need for a 4 to 5-day trek. The inhabitants of Lomanthang are deeply influenced by Tibetan culture and traditions, predominantly practicing Tibetan Buddhism, with most belonging to the Sakyapa sect, which recognizes the Dalai Lama as their principal religious leader.

The religious community holds a belief in the existence of both gods and goddesses, asserting that if deities exist in the universe, demons must also be present. The conflicts between these divine and demonic forces give rise to various festivals. Among the numerous celebrations, the most prominent are the Tiji, Yartung, and Lhosar festivals.

Tiji Festival: The Tiji festival is the most significant celebration in Lomanthang, occurring in April and May. The community’s astrologer determines the appropriate dates by analyzing the religious positions of celestial bodies. This festival boasts a tradition that spans nearly 800 years.

Yartung Festival: The Yartung festival is centered around horse riding, featuring a major competition that showcases equestrian skills.

Lhosar Festival: The Lhosar festival marks the New Year for the people of Lomanthang, which differs from the Gregorian calendar as they adhere to a lunar calendar. Their calendar is characterized by various animals and elements, with the year 2025 designated as the Year of the Snake, associated with the element of wood.

During this journey, you will be treated to stunning views of snow-capped mountains, including the magnificent Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges, as well as the iconic Fishtail and Manaslu peaks. Upon reaching Syangboche, we will enjoy tea or coffee while our lunch is being prepared by the hotel staff. During this time, we will visit Chungsi Cave, a significant site on the Lomanthang tour and trek. This cave houses a statue of Buddha, who is said to have meditated here during his journey to Tibet, making it a place of great importance for Buddhists, particularly for Tibetan individuals. We will spend about 30 minutes exploring the cave and enjoying tea with a local Lama. Donations are welcomed if you wish to contribute. After our visit, we will return to the hotel where our lunch will be ready. The restaurant staff will serve our meal, and we will enjoy our lunch together. Following lunch, we will embark on another hour-long visit to Ghargumba, one of the most significant and beautiful monasteries in Mustang. We will spend approximately 45 minutes sightseeing at Ghargumba before continuing our one-hour drive to Lomanthang, the final destination of our tour. The journey from Jomsom to Lomanthang offers an exceptional off-road driving experience in a jeep. Due to the high elevation, rainfall is quite rare in the Upper Mustang region.Lomanthang experiences a desert climate year-round, with the exception of snowfall during the winter months. The winter season spans from December to February.

  • In the morning, breakfast will be provided. Following the meal, there will be an opportunity for sightseeing in Lomanthang, which is home to numerous monasteries and the Royal Palace within its fortified walls. Participants may engage in meditation at various monasteries, such as Thupchen Gompa, Jhampa Gompa, and Chhoede Gompa. The monastic and Amchi schools are particularly noteworthy, as they serve to educate young children in the Buddhist faith. In the mountainous regions of Nepal, monasteries are commonly referred to as Gompas.

Among these, Jhampa Gompa stands out as the oldest, having been established in 1387 AD. It is believed to be a replica of the Ghangtse Jhampa Gompa located in Tibet. Thupchen Gompa, the second oldest in Lomanthang, was constructed in the early 15th century, while Chhoede Gompa was built in 1757. Each of these gompas is renowned for its unique Tibetan paintings and meditation practices. The artwork within the monasteries is significant, depicting the life stories of various deities, including their battles against demons. These narratives often illustrate the deities’ efforts to safeguard humanity, religion, and their strongholds.

Although Lomanthang no longer has a monarchy, the Royal Palace remains situated in the heart of the walled city. This palace, constructed in the 14th century, was the residence of the royal family until the monarchy was abolished in 2008.

  • Following breakfast, proceed to Choser village, renowned for its rich cave culture. The village is home to numerous caves, with Jhong cave being particularly notable. This cave features over 40 rooms and spans five stories, having been carved into the rock. In ancient times, the entire population of Choser resided within Jhong cave. The primary attractions of Choser village include its ancient monasteries. Niphu monastery, also known as Nyiphuk Garghu Norbuling Gompa, was established in the 14th century, while Garphu monastery, or Garghu Dhejing Chhyoling Gompa, dates back to the 15th century. All of these monasteries exemplify traditional Tibetan architectural styles.

  • Following breakfast, you will embark on a visit to Thinker Village, another notable attraction in Lo-Manthang. The journey will require approximately a 45-minute walk from either Lo-Manthang city or your accommodation. In proximity to Thinker Village, you will find the summer royal palace, Namgyal Gompa, and Ketcher Dzong. Namgyal Gompa, a striking gompa located in Thinker Village, also houses a school where children are educated in Buddhist teachings and meditation practices. Additionally, Namgyal Gompa features a Buddhist museum showcasing various statues of Buddhist deities, symbolizing victory.

Ketcher Dzong, the first royal palace of Lo-Manthang, was constructed by Ame Pal, the inaugural king of Lo-Manthang, in the early 14th century.

Subsequently, you will have the opportunity to engage with the Lama community over tea before returning to your hotel for lunch. After your meal, you may take a break to rest or explore the city area for souvenirs. In the evening, you can visit a monastery to participate in meditation before returning to the hotel for dinner. The following day, you will prepare to depart from Lo-Manthang and pack your belongings.

  • Following breakfast at 9:00 AM, we will depart from Lomanthang en route to Jomsom. Along the way, we will visit the stunning monastery in Tsarang, which also serves as a Buddhist school. This institution accommodates over one hundred students who study both Buddhist teachings and standard academic subjects. The majority of these students hail from the Mustang, Dolpa, and Kalikot districts. Notably, their education is provided free of charge, funded by the monastery, with daily operations supported by donations from various organizations. Visitors are welcome to engage with the students and enjoy a tea break during our sightseeing in Tsarang.

The Tsarang Monastery, known as Thupten Shad Drup Dharkling Gompa, is affiliated with the Sakyapa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. This remarkable monastery, established in 1385 AD, was founded by three Sangbos: Ngorchen Kunga Sangbo from Tibet, Chhyogel Ame Pal Sangbo, the first king of Lo-Manthang, and Kalten Chhewang, the minister of Ame Pal.

Inside the monastery, one can find images of Sakyamuni Buddha, Jyampa, Dhorje Midukpa, and Abbot Ngorchen Kunga Sangbo, along with numerous exquisite Thangka paintings. The monastery was constructed to serve the nine villages of Yara, Ghara, Surkhang, Dhi, Tangya, Dhe, Tsarang, Marang, and Dhakmar, playing a pivotal role in the flourishing of Tibetan Buddhism in Mustang.

In addition to the monastery, Tsarang also features a royal palace built in 1378 AD by the same three Sangbos responsible for the monastery’s construction. After our exploration of Tsarang, we will continue our journey for an additional three hours to reach Jomsom, where you will have the opportunity to enjoy dinner.

  • At 6:40 AM, you will take a flight from Jomsom back to Pokhara. During this journey, you will be treated to stunning views of the Nilgiri Himal, Pisang Peak, Tilicho Peak, Tukuche Peak, and the extensive Annapurna range, which includes Dhampus Peak and Dhaulagiri Himal. Both Annapurna and Dhaulagiri rise above 8,000 meters. Below, the picturesque Marpha village showcases beautiful apple and apricot orchards. The flight follows the same route, soaring above the Kaligandaki River. Along the way, you will also catch sight of the charming Ghorepani village and the renowned Poon Hill viewpoint, which is one of Nepal’s most celebrated observation points. From Poon Hill, visitors can admire the majestic Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges, along with numerous other peaks. The flight duration to Pokhara is approximately 20 minutes. Upon arrival at Pokhara airport, you will be transferred to your hotel for breakfast. The remainder of the day is free for you to either relax or explore the sights of Pokhara. Notable attractions include Devi’s Fall, the Tibetan refugee camp, the Mountain Museum, the Seti River gorge, and boating on Phewa Lake.

  • In the morning, you will enjoy breakfast while taking in the stunning views of Phewa Lake, framed by snow-capped mountains. Following this, you will have your final lunch in Pokhara. In the afternoon, you will travel to Pokhara International Airport for your flight back to Kathmandu, which lasts approximately 25 minutes. Upon your arrival at Kathmandu Airport, you will be transferred to your hotel in a private vehicle. You will then have around five hours of leisure time, which you can use for souvenir shopping or relaxing at your hotel. In the evening, you will be taken to a cultural house where you will experience traditional Nepali folk dances accompanied by a typical Nepali dinner. Nepal is home to various ethnic groups, each with their own unique attire, music, and dance styles, providing you with the opportunity to witness a diverse array of tribal performances. After the cultural program and dinner, you will return to your hotel.
