Overview
Annapurna Base Camp Trekking
Annapurna Base Camp trek, reaching an elevation of 4,200 meters (13,650 feet), is regarded as one of the premier trekking experiences in Nepal, offering the opportunity to traverse snowy terrain and admire snow-capped peaks year-round. The Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) is situated at the base of Mt. Annapurna First, Annapurna South, and Mt. Himchuli.
The entire Annapurna Region is a natural paradise. The Annapurna trek meanders through rice fields, picturesque villages, lush forests, bamboo groves, rivers, stunning landscapes, and showcases the indigenous culture along with a diverse array of Himalayan birds, animals, and plant life.
For your information, the ABC trek and the Annapurna Century trek are essentially the same. This trek commences from Phedi Nayapul, which translates to ‘new bridge,’ located approximately 41 kilometers from Pokhara.
ABC trekking is in the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA). The National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) established the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) in 1986 to protect the natural resources of ACA for environment conservation. It is the first Conservation Area and largest Protected Area in Nepal.

Main Attractions
The breathtaking panorama of the entire Mt. Annapurna range, along with the adjacent towering peaks of Mt. Dhaulagiri and Mt. Machapuchre (known as Fish Tail in English), offers the closest perspective of the glaciers.
The Annapurna region is home to the largest rhododendron forests in the world, located in Ghorepani, which is a picturesque short trek in Nepal. Additionally, Tilicho Lake, situated in the Manang district, is recognized as the highest-altitude freshwater lake in the Himalayas, also found within this region.
The ABC trail is inhabited by over 100,000 individuals from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The Gurung and Magar indigenous communities are predominant in the southern areas, while the northern regions are primarily occupied by the Thakali, Manange, and Loba groups. These communities are rich in their cultural heritage and traditions, each possessing their own dialects. For many years, numerous Gurungs have served in the British Army as Nepalese Gurkha soldiers. There are countless stories, both told and untold, regarding the former Gurkha soldiers in the Annapurna region. During this trek, one can visit the Gurung Museum to explore these narratives.
Adventure
ABC offers an exhilarating trek for enthusiasts of snow. The path from Deurali to ABC is predominantly covered in snow. During the months of March and April, the trekking route to ABC Trek can have over 5 feet of snow. It is safe to traverse the snow-covered terrain.
Avalanches in Annapurna Trek
Avalanches occurring during the Annapurna base camp trek represent a significant concern for trekkers. Without a proper understanding of avalanche safety protocols, the situation can become life-threatening, potentially resulting in fatalities among trekkers. I have personally faced numerous encounters with avalanches along the trekking route to Annapurna base camp. There are several locations where avalanches can occur, primarily from Bamboo to Machapuchre base camp. In mountainous regions, avalanches are prevalent; however, they typically do not impact the trekking trails, posing minimal risk. Nonetheless, along the route to Annapurna base camp, avalanches frequently occur between Bamboo and Machapuchre base camp. If you are accompanied by an experienced guide, there is no need for concern. As avalanches descend, they produce a distinct sound, and a cold wind precedes their arrival. Therefore, it is essential for the guide to be aware of the avalanche’s direction. Avalanches tend to follow the path of the wind, and trekkers must navigate to either the left or right accordingly. If you find yourself caught in the wind’s path, it is crucial to cross it immediately. Avalanches do not cover extensive areas; typically, you can traverse the distance in just 20 to 30 seconds. It is advisable not to linger on trails where avalanches are imminent.
Avalanches predominantly occur during March and April, as heavy snowfall in winter months like January and February creates substantial snow accumulations. With the onset of summer in March and April, the sun’s intensity increases, causing the snow to melt and subsequently leading to avalanches. Therefore, it is recommended to commence trekking in the early morning hours. During the daytime, temperatures rise significantly, increasing the likelihood of avalanches.
Best Time for Annapurna base camp Trekking
The ideal seasons for the ABC trek are from October to December and from March to May. Nevertheless, this trek is feasible year-round. If you choose to trek to ABC during the monsoon season, be prepared to encounter leeches along the trail, and possibly a few on your legs. If you are not deterred by the presence of leeches, you may proceed with this trek even during the monsoon
Challenges
We have witnessed avalanches occasionally during the trek often in March and April. In the winter, some part of the trail is blocked with snow.

Detail Info
Precaution during the Annapurna Base Camp trek
Precaution during the Annapurna Base Camp trek is very important for all trekkers or hikers in all seasons, especially from January to May. The Annapurna Base Camp trek is an easy trek that passes through beautiful mountainous villages like Gkandruk, Ghorepani, and Chomrong with green fields and hills. The trail on this trek goes up and down hills. However, trekkers can make it through the whole year by hiking. But October to December and March to June are the best seasons. December, January, and February are the winter months in Nepal when there is heavy snowfall in the mountains. From March on, the snow starts melting and falling down in the form of avalanches, glaciers, and finally rivers. Sometimes they fall down as small solids and do not cause problems for the trekkers. But sometimes they fall in the form of a big solid that is very dangerous and deadly. On the Annapurna Base Camp trek, from Bamboo to Fishtail Base Camp, there are regular avalanches, and they are really dangerous and have taken the lives of many trekkers. Trekkers lose their lives due to the lack of information. We can make our trip safe, adventurous, and wonderful only if we are a little bit careful and have enough knowledge of avalanches. For a safe trek, the trekkers need an experienced guide. From January to May, trekkers should be very careful while walking from Bamboo to Fishtail Base Camp and take enough information from the trekking agency and trekking experts.
I visited Annapurna Base Camp many times with tourists as a trekking leader and guide and encountered many avalanches but did not have any problems. I saw some tourists, their guides, and porters spotted dead by avalanches. So, if you have any questions about the Annapurna base camp trek, please contact me at 977-985-1089399, trek with our company, or go with some other trekking company.
Visa: You can get an arrival visa at Kathmandu airport that costs 30 US dollars for 15 days, 50 US dollars for 30 days and 125 US dollars for 90 days. Please bring 2 passport-size photos. You can get your visa from the closest Nepali embassy too.
Annapurna Base Camp Accommodations
In Kathmandu, we provide a 2-star equivalent hotel like an international guest house with bed and breakfast. In trekking, we provide an attached toilet room in the low lands. As we arrive at higher elevations, it is difficult to get an attached toilet room and a single room in peak season. In peak season, we have to share the room. But we will try to provide a single room if it is possible.
Food and beverages during the Annapurna base camp trek
We can get all kinds of food while trekking, choose from a menu, and eat as much as we want. We do not recommend eating any kinds of meat that is carried by local porters from low land for 2-3 days. In the trekking region, they are not allowed to kill any animals. We recommend eating all kinds of vegetarian food and eggs. You can have meat when you arrive in the lowlands of Pokhara and Kathmandu. You can get all kinds of drinks on the trekking route. We recommend drinking mineral water, boiled water, or purified water. A purifying tablet is provided by our guide. All kinds of cold drinks and beers are available in tea houses. In higher elevations, we do not recommend drinking hard drinks.
Annapurna base camp trek guide and porter
We provide English-speaking guides and some of the guides can speak extra languages like Chinese, German, French, Spanish, Italian, and Russian. Extra language guides are not included in this cost. On request of the guest, we provide an extra language guide at no extra cost. Our guides and porters are very helpful, kind, and dedicated to their duty. Every day, they send us a message about the guest’s situation and the weather in trekking.
How hard is it to go to Annapurna base camp on a trek?
Annapurna base camp trek is a moderate trek due to many up and down hills though there are hundreds of beautiful breathtaking sceneries. If you have good practice walking up and down hills, it is not so hard. The trekking trail passes along a narrow, slippery gorge road. There are many places on the way to the trail that are really in danger of landslides and avalanches. Many times, I encountered landslides and avalanches. You can make it easy if you follow some rules and regulations before starting your trek towards Annapurna base camp. After Bamboo, it is better to walk in the morning. Because the snow piles froze all night, they begin to melt or break and fall as a large avalanche on a sunny day. To protect themselves from high-altitude sickness, if tourists walk slowly and steadily with many breaks on the way to the trek, they can acclimatize easily, and the trek will be easy. Every 1 to 2 hours on the way to the trek, there are tea houses where tourists can get enough liquids and rest. If possible, try to practice walking through steeps. Jogging and swimming are equally helpful. Any exercise that is convenient for you and helps you be fit is recommended.
How long does it take to get to Annapurna base camp?

A trek filled with breathtaking scenery and warm hospitality! The Annapurna Base Camp trek was an unforgettable experience, thanks to Nepal Mountain Lovers. The well-paced itinerary allowed for proper acclimatization, and the team ensured we had the best teahouse stays along the way. Walking through diverse landscapes and experiencing the local Gurung culture made this journey even more special. Standing at ABC, surrounded by majestic peaks, was a moment I’ll never forget!
